The Science of AMD Why does wet AMD cause vision loss?

The Science of AMD Treatments aimed at angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth) in the eye are called “antiangiogenic therapies,” or “anti-VEGF therapies” because they aim at a protein called VEGF, which is found to be a primary cause of blood vessel growth in the eye. Anti-VEGF therapies can slow the progression of AMD and, in some cases, improve vision.
